The record matters more than the story. When we get something wrong, we say so and fix it in the open.
Write to [email protected] with the word CORRECTION in the subject line, or use our contact page. Tell us which article the error appears in, what is wrong, what the correct information is, and where it can be verified. Reports from readers, shipyards, brokers, crew, and the trade receive the same attention.
We correct substantive factual errors: wrong names, dates, places, dimensions, figures, quotations, attributions, and materially misleading descriptions. The article is corrected promptly, and a dated correction note is added at the foot of the article describing what changed. Minor typographical slips are fixed without a note.
A correction fixes the record; it does not renegotiate an article's conclusions. If new information materially changes a story, we update the article and note the update with its date. If a story's foundations prove unsound, we retract it with an explanation rather than quietly editing it away.
No corrections have been issued to date. When corrections are made, they are noted on the affected articles as described above.
