Every yachtsman should cruise the Amalfi Coast once, and the trick is doing it like the regulars. The circuit is compact: Capri, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello from the water, with the islands of Ischia and Procida as the quieter counterpoints.
Timing is everything. August is a beautiful mistake; June and September deliver the same light with half the traffic. Anchor early in the Blue Grotto's lee, take a mooring ball off Positano rather than fighting for the quay, and save Amalfi town for the morning before the day boats arrive.
Capri's Marina Piccola is the classic overnight, rolly in a southerly and magical in calm. For dinner ashore, the island's back streets hold the tables the yacht crowd actually books.
The verdict: the most famous cruising ground in the Med rewards those who respect its rhythms. Go in September, anchor early, dine late.
