Thermal cameras detect heat rather than light, which lets them show vessels, channel markers, and people in darkness, light haze, and sun glare. The M232 is FLIR's compact pan-and-tilt model for this role.
The sensor is a 320 by 240 vanadium oxide microbolometer with a 24 by 18 degree field of view and 4x continuous digital zoom. The camera pans a continuous 360 degrees and tilts from plus 110 to minus 90 degrees.
Video leaves the camera as a single H.264 network stream for compatible multifunction displays, with 12 or 24 VDC power. The maker publishes clear-weather detection figures of 1.60 nautical miles for a 30-foot vessel and 362 meters for a human-sized target. The housing is rated IPX6.
