Seven by fifty is the long-standing marine binocular format: enough magnification to read a buoy number, a wide exit pupil for brightness at dusk, and low enough power to hold steady on a moving deck. The Commander is Steiner's implementation.
The optics use the Sports-Auto-Focus system, which keeps subjects from 20 metres to infinity in focus without adjustment. The field of view is approximately 140 metres at 1,000 metres.
The housing is nitrogen-filled against internal fogging and waterproof to 10 metres, with rubber armouring. Steiner's Nano-Protection hydrophobic coating is applied to the lenses so spray beads off. A compass variant adds an integrated HD compass for taking bearings.
